Anchored in God
ANCHORED IN GOD
By CONSTANTINE CAVARNOS
In this objective, clearly written and fascinating book, Prof. Cavarnos explains the aims and means of monasticism on Mount Athos. He describes the monks’ daily routine of activities, including private and corporate prayer or worship, study, and work. Through questions, he elicits the views of the monks on monasticism, contemporary mankind, philosophy, solitude, fasting, prayer and other topics. An authority on Byzantine art, Dr. Cavarnos gives detailed observations of superb frescoes and panel icons, pointing out the role they play in the life of the monks, and also deals with the architecture of the churches and the music that is sung there. For those interested in religion, particularly Eastern Orthodox Christianity, in Byzantine art, the Greek and Slavic mind and tradition, reading this book will be a stimulating and rewarding experience.
Anchored in God was first published in 1959 at Athens, Greece. Having been out of print for years, it is made available again in its original form, except for some minor changes, mainly corrections of typographical errors.
“The author, a Greek-American born in Boston, gives here an account of three visits made to Mount Athos in 1952, 1954 and 1958, and of his conversations held there with some of the monks. The result, admirably illustrated with numerous photographs and some charming designs by Fotis Kontoglou and Rallis Kopsidis, is quite the most attractive and serious work on the subject which we have yet seen in a small compass.”
—Eastern Churches Quarterly.
etA brilliant career as a philosopher, a good initiation in Byzantine art, and a perfect knowledge of the language of his ancestors, have advantageously disposed Mr. Cavarnos to note what is admirable in the life of a monk on Athos.”
—E. Davids, in Studia Monastica.
c CAP unusual new book about Mount Athos. It has the advantage of being impregnated with the religious spirit which other, {nore detached, accounts so obviously lack.”
—Thomas Merton, in Disputed Questions.
c CA delightful book. As the well-spring of Orthodox spirituality, the Holy Mountain should be a familiar subject to every believer. Here is a splendid introduction.”
—Orthodoxy.
“Anchored in God is the best real portrayal of the Holy Mountain that we have.”
—Thomas Phelan, in The American Ecclesiastical Review.
