Nous voici entrés dans une période de dure contestation. On proclame la mort de Dieu au nom de l’autonomie de l’homme et de la puissance des sciences; au même moment – mais est-ce un hazard?- l’apologie de la violence se propage; elle se réclame de l’Evangile du Christ et va jusqu’à s’ériger en théologie. Une fois encore, et peut-être plus dangereusement que jamais, on veut lier le christianisme à une politique que l’Evangile dicterait aujourd’hui. Et les chrétiens ne s’entendent plus sur la signification de leur foi. Dans cette tempête spirituelle, la penséé chrétienne se trouve mise en déroute.

The manner in which Orthodoxy was introduced into East Africa during the twentieth century, and the way in which it has taken root and spread, can only be explained in terms of a Divine miracle. Orthodoxy has spread phenomenally throughout East Africa. From Uganda, it has spread into Kenya, Tanzania and all Africa. In recent years, the Orthodox Churches of Finland, Greece, Cyprus and America have assisted their sister Church in East Africa. This help in no way detracts from the fact that the planting of Orthodoxy in East Africa was achieved by African men and African enterprise without any external missionary support. His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, Metropolitan of Zimbabwe, a native of Cyprus, began his missionary activity in East Africa as the Prinicipal of the Patriarchal Seminary which was established in Kenya by His Beatitude Archbishop Makarios III of Cyprus. In 1992, he was elected and consecrated Bishop of Riruta. He continued as principal of the Patriarchal Seminary until September 1997. The following year, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria elected him as Metropolitan of Zimbabwe. His collection of sermons and other discourses, delivered on various occasions, gives an insight into a work of transformation. Seventy years ago, authentic Orthodoxy did not exist in East Africa. Today, a network of hundreds of parishes extends across the length and breadth of this vast area of the continent. It is an event of no small significance in modern Christian history. These sermons serve to provide a witness to this remarkable phenomenon.

Michael Casey nodigt de lezer uit om samen met hem een oude methode van beschouwend bidden te ontdekken. Talloze boeken spreken over haar, kunstwerken stellen haar voor op duizend wijzen, en ieder schrijver, en ieder kunstenaar heeft ongetwijfeld gedacht origineel werk te leveren, zozeer is het waar dat alle generaties, op hun eigen wijze, haar zalig prijzen.
Ook de bladzijden van dit boek beogen een zekere originaliteit. Ze nodigen uit om Maria te contempleren in het altijd nieuwe licht van het paasmysterie, en om zo in haar gelijktijdig de Icoon te ontdekken van de Heilige Geest en van de Kerk. Aanknopend bij een oude traditie, beschouwt Vaticanum II haar als een beeld van de Kerk; zij is ook, en dit in eerste instantie, een spiegel van het mysterie van de Heilige Geest, in wie God zijn Zoon verwekt, in wie Hij de ontelbare broeders van Christus verwekt. Om het met de heilige Basilius te zeggen, de Geest is “de onafscheidelijke gezel” van Christus; volgens de Apostel is de Kerk het lichaam van Christus en kan men haar niet van Hem scheiden. Maria is de icoon van deze Geest en van die Kerk, die onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met Christus.
Het is dus een boek dat zowel over de Geest, over Christus, over de Kerk spreekt, als over Maria. Een boek dat toch geen streng theologisch traktaat is: de Icoon is ons gegeven voor de vreugde van het oog, voor het gebed van het hart, een openbaring van het mysterie van de Geest en van de Kerk, een weg die leidt naar Christus en naar het heil dat in Hem is.
