This album from the Museum Cities series introduces the reader to the ancient Russian town of Pereslavl-Zalessky. In the 12th-14th centuries Pereslavl was the seat of an appanage principality which lay on the road from Novgorod to Vladimir and Suzdal. One of its princes was the famous Alexander Nevsky. The town remembers the time of oprichniks – the all-powerful lifeguards of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Here the young Tsar Peter the Great built the first ship of the Russian Navy and had them tested on Pleshcheyevo Lake. The album tells of the town’s history and architecture. It describes the exposition of the Pereslavl Museum: paintings, frescoes and works of applied art.

Саввино-Сторожевский монастырь

В 1998 году исполнилось 600 лет Звенигородскому Саввино-Сторожевскому монастырю.

Его основателем является ученик и сподвижник преподобного Сергия Радонежского — преподобный Савва Звенигородский. В 1398 году по просьбе своего духовного сына — звенигородского князя Юрия Димитриевича он переселился в удел последнего. На горе Стороже, которую преподобный Савва избрал для своего жительства, им был устроен мужской монастырь в честь Рождества Пресвятой Богородицы. За шесть столетий монастырь пережил многое, но особая, трагическая, страница в историю обители была вписана в начале XX века. Честные останки ее строителя — преподобного Саввы — 17 марта 1919 года подверглись осквернению в ходе проводившейся большевиками кощунственной компании по вскрытию мощей православных святых. Чудом спасенные от уничтожения, они более пятидесяти лет хранились в благочестивой московской семье, а в 1984 году были переданы в возрожденный Данилов монастырь. Четырнадцать лет великая православная святыня пребывала в монастырских стенах, благодатно укрепляя верующих, подавая духовное утешение насельникам и прихожанам. После того, как в 1997 году в Саввино-Сторожевской обители возобновилась монашеская жизнь, Святейший Патриарх Московский и всея Руси Алексий II благословил вернуть святые мощи на их историческое место. Перенесение мощей преподобного Саввы было приурочено к торжествам по случаю шестисотлетия монастыря. Юбилейные празднества, проходившие 22-23 августа 1998 года в Москве и Звенигороде, возглавил Святейший Патриарх Алексий.

MOUNT ATHOS is a land of monks and hermits where no woman, child or eunuch is admitted. Twenty ‘Ruling Monasteries’ provide the unique form of local government over this remote peninsula in northern Greece which culminates in the 7,000-foot peak—the Holy Mountain of the Orthodox faith. The authors of this book came to study the churches, libraries and treasures and to record in photographs as much as the monks would permit. Apart from staying at the great monasteries—seventeen of which are Greek, one Russian, one Serbian and one Bulgarian—they also visited some of the dependent communities. Those vary in size from small villages to the precarious cliff dwellings of the true anchorites who still seek after the ‘Uncreated Light of Mount Tabor’ and follow the austerities prescribed a thousand years ago by St Athanasius the Athonite. In a paradise of mountain and forest, Athos constitutes a survival from the Byzantine age, but recruits are few, and the noise and tensions of the modern world are closing in. This book attempts to portray some aspects of a strange, picturesque but doomed way of life. The first section consists of an account by John Julius Norwich of the history of Athos from its origins to the present day, and relates this to the lives of the monks themselves. He seeks to analyze and explain their motives, impulses and beliefs. The second half of the book comprises the journal of Reresby Sitwell and describes the individual monasteries and other places of interest, the adventures of the journey and how the ceremonial pattern of welcome was varied everywhere by the vagaries of hospitality and cuisine. The book is dramatically illustrated with thirty-two pages of photographs in full color and as many black and white, all contributed by the authors and their companion, A. Costa.
