Het verhaal van Ignatius van Loyola begint als Spaanse ridder, die na een verwonding in de Slag bij Pamplona (1521) een diepgaande spirituele bekering doormaakt. Tijdens zijn herstel bestudeert hij het leven van Jezus en de heiligen, wat hem inspireert om een leven in dienst van God en de Kerk te wijden. Deze pelgrimstocht leidt uiteindelijk tot de stichting van het Gezelschap van Jezus, beter bekend als de jezuïetenorde.

Gedurende vijfentwintig vruchtbare jaren gaat abt Michel van Parys de benedictijnse gemeenschap van Chevetogne voor als geestelijke vader. Door zijn geestelijke lezingen, homilieën, conferenties en artikels laat hij zijn broeders drinken van het steeds frisse, jeugdige water der oer-oude bronnen zoals daar zijn: de heilige Schrift, de monastieke traditie van de woestijnvaders en van onze Vader Benedictus, de oecumene.
