Though the art of the icon could be said to have reached perfection in the Byzantine world, Russians gave it a new, national complexion and produced some of the finest examples of the art. Icons were first produced for churches and processions. As they became smaller, so demand as household objects grew. The 65 plates in this book are beautiful, dating from the 14th &#8211; 17th centuries, many belonging to the school of Novgorod, Rublev, And Dionysus.</span></p>
