In de 45 strofische gedichten die Hadewijch naliet staat de minne centraal. De minne is de poging tot éénwording met God. De tegenstelling tussen het aardse van de ik-figuur en het bovennatuurlijke, het ongrijpbare van God is daarin een steeds terugkerend thema.
